How to Combat Humidity, the Heat & Frizzy Hair

Living in Florida, there’s a 1000% chance it’s going to rain—or at least feel like it. That forecast alone plays a huge role in whether or not I bother putting any effort into my hair. It’s kind of like picking out outfits in the winter: we are well past the age of freezing to get into a club. If I’m going to be out in the heat, I’m stepping out with Shakira hair and letting the frizz have its way.

But let’s be honest—it’s frustrating.

If my hair is straight, the humidity makes it limp and frizzy.

If it’s curly, I want it Kelis in Milkshake big, and it still goes flat.

It feels like I can’t win.

So, I did what I always do when I’m fed up—I researched. And here’s what I found about actually outsmarting the Florida sun.

The Science Behind Humidity & Hair

Your hair is made up of different types of bonds-no, not the emotional kind, though we do get attached. The health of these bonds determines the overall strength and integrity of your strands. You may have heard of treatments like Olaplex No. 3—that’s a bond builder—and keratin, the protein that hair is made of. Their purpose is to strengthen the internal aspects of our hair.

But the bond that really messes with us when it comes to humidity?

Hydrogen bonds.

These are the bonds we break when we use heat (flat irons, curling wands, blow dryers) to style our hair. But they’re also the bonds that snap right back when exposed to water or moisture in the air. Have you ever flat ironed your hair and then tried to curl it after and it refused to listen? That's because the bonds are weakend from the high heat of the flat iron and reintroducing heat too soon can prevent the bonds from reforming properly and make it difficult to create curls.

Humidity breaks those hydrogen bonds, causing hair to swell, shrink, and go rogue. Over time, this can lead to weaker strands, breakage, and even hair loss.

If your hair has low porosity, humidity can weigh it down and make it flat.

If your hair is highly porous, it absorbs too much moisture and frizzes out.

Babe said I needed to let people know what porosity is. It's the hair's abiility to absorb and hold moisture. You'll hear alot of that word in this blog.

The fix? Hydration.

The drier your hair is, the more it drinks up that humid air like its happy hour. When hair is dry, it craves moisture—so it will absorb it from the air. But when hair is properly hydrated, there’s less room for that external moisture to sneak in and cause frizz or limpness.

That’s why a solid moisture routine is key. Hydrating the hair and then sealing it with the right products can help maintain your style and prevent the effects of the weather from undoing your hard work.

The real magic is finding the right amount of moisture and layering the right products to support your hair type and porosity.

How to Humidity-Proof Your Hair

Think of anti-humidity products like a liquid umbrella.

They create a barrier around the hair, shielding it from frizz, shrinkage, limpness, and UV damage.

Curly Hair:

Bumble and Bumble Curl Anti-Humidity Gel-Oil – Adds bounce, shine, and definition with added UV protection.

JVN Complete Air Dry Cream – For my heat-free naturals. Helps tame frizz and enhance your natural curl pattern without sacrificing definition. This is the product bridging the gap between much needed heat tools, and fighting frizz by being your saving grace for natural tamed hairstyling.

Fine or Straight Hair:

Virtue Frizz Block Smoothing Spray – Weightless and works for up to 72 hours while protecting from UV rays. Withstanding heat temperatures up to 450 degrees this will resist thermal damage from your styling tools and the sun.

Styling Tips:

• Fine hair is more flexible and prone to going limp. It also doesn’t absorb as much, so moisture sits on top of the strand.

• Use a moisturizing mask or leave-in conditioner from mid-shaft to ends—avoid the roots. Focus on the dryer parts of your hair. The older the hair is the more susceptible it is to absorption...that includes heat.

• Boost your roots with a volumizing spray or mousse. My must have for myself and behind the chair is Sexy Hair's Root Pump Plus. I section my hair in 1" sections regardless if I'm air drying or styling. I make sure to clip my hair upward so the roots dry against it's natural fall. Once the hair is dry it tends to

want to set in its own way. Making volume harder to work against.

• When blow drying, direct air upward to fight gravity and create volume. Don't be afraid to flip your hair over and target the roots first. Then when clipping away sections during styling, always direct the hair upward.

High-Porosity or Curly Hair:

Color Wow Dream Coat – Anti-humidity, heat-protectant spray. Works like an "invisible cloak" to repel moisture, smooth strands, and weatherproof your style. Can be slightly heavy, not recommended for thinner densities. If you have hairline baby hair’s that behave like Bebe’s kids this is one product that will keep those edges in check.

Tips:

• Start with oil to seal the cuticle and block external moisture. Silicone products are great to coat the outer hair shaft without penetrating to prevent weighing down the hair.

• Look for a frizz-fighting heat protectant.

Layer hydration and sealants (like leave-ins and light oils) to fill in gaps in the strand and protect against humidity. Don't be afraid to cocktail products. A little bit of this and a little bit of that, emulsify in your hands and then work into the hair.

My Personal Faves:

Amika The Shield Anti-Humidity Spray – Protects up to 450°F and acts as a UV and frizz shield. This is a one stop shop. When I travel I take the a curling iron, brush, and a comb. If I can find products that serve multiple purposes it’s a win/win for me…specially when babe isn’t allowing me to check a bag! This one gets the trophy for hold and weather locking.

It’s a 10 Miracle Blow Dry H2O Shield – For the girlies who love a blowout. Heat protectant + frizz fighter + moisture sealer. If you’re an everyday styler, never go to bed with your hair wet and can’t trust your mane to follow directions, this product not only is going to be on the front line of war against humidity but has built in ingredients like pantheon and sunflower seed extract which soften and moisturize the hair. A way to manage your look and hair’s health in one step. It is heat activated, this is not a leave in and walk away product.

Conclusion: Hair That Holds Up—Rain or Shine

Humidity doesn’t have to hijack your hair goals.

The Florida climate may be challenging, but it’s not unbeatable. Understanding how your hair behaves and knowing how to support it with hydration and protective products can make all the difference.

Whether you’re going natural, blown out, curly, or somewhere in between—there are tools and techniques that can help you maintain your style and keep your hair healthy and manageable in even the stickiest weather.
